The surgeons at Twin Cities Heart and Lung believe in patient education. We've designed our site to help you learn about procedures so you can understand them and proceed with your treatment with the knowledge to put your fears to rest.
You will be given one or two soap sponges to use when you shower the night before and the morning of your operation. As with other surgical procedures, remember that you should not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery. If you take medications, you should discuss with your doctor and anesthesiologist whether you should continue the medication prior to your surgery.
After Surgery Instructions:
After endovenous ablation therapy and sclerotherapy the patient can almost immediately resume most of their normal activities, though there will likely be some soreness in the legs treated. Surgical stripping patients typically stay over night in the hospital, and need several days of recovery after that.
After treatment your legs will be wrapped tightly in bandages. Walking is possible the day of surgery, and is encouraged to minimize swelling and avoid the risk of deep venous thrombosis (blood clots). It is important that feet are kept raised above the heart whenever possible, to reduce pressure on the healing scars.
