Biopsies (small pieces of tissue doctors examine under a microscope) are a key step in an accurate diagnosis of lung cancer. Computed tomography (CT) screening has aided in the detection of small abnormal (potentially cancerous) areas in the lung; CT screens guide doctors in choosing which area or areas may need a biopsy. There are several procedures that can be used to perform a biopsy.
